Indonesian President Joko Widodo is set to open the 2nd Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024 on September 5th in Jakarta, bringing together world leaders, CEOs and sustainability experts to catalyze climate breakthroughs in the corporate world.
The Indonesian Government, through the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) hosted the ISF 2024, in partnership with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia).
More than 5,000 people are expected to show up at the ISF 2024, making it the largest gathering on sustainability issues in the Asia-Pacific region, after the UN Climate Change Conference or COP 29 in Azerbaijan capital, Baku. The ISF 2024 also plans to produce policy recommendations that will be brought to COP 29 in November.
Among the speakers to headline the ISF 2024 are Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs; Jin Zuanglong, Minister of Industry and IT for People’s Republic of China (PRC), Huang Rungqiu, Minister of Environment for PRC, Ève Bazaiba, Minister of the Environment for Democratic Republic of Congo; Peter Thomson, UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean; and Dechen Tsering, Director of the Climate Change Division at United Nations for Environment Programme (UNEP).
Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Transportation of the Kemenko Marves, said the ISF has become the main platform for global business players to deepen collaboration on sustainability practices.
“We are now in a make-or-break moment because every little step can lead to a setback or progress. With most global greenhouse gas emissions coming from business and industrial activities, the urgency for closer corporate involvement in sustainability has never been more pressing. Businesses must step up, innovate, and own the process towards a greener, and more inclusive sustainable future through collaborative efforts which the ISF 2024 will provide,” said Mr. Kaimuddin.
He added that the ISF will also provide insights on Indonesia’s decarbonization journey which make up the core of the country’s climate commitment.
Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, Coordinating Vice Chairwoman for Maritime, Foreign, and Investment Affairs of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia), echoed Kaimuddin’s views, adding that the private sector has a critical role in promoting sustainability practices.
“There will be no future on a dead planet. This is why we need to ensure the sustainability of the world today. We are faced with an emergency, which should be everyone’s concern, including the corporate world. Moreover, embracing sustainability through Environmental Social Governance (ESG) practices and standards makes a compelling business case because ESG-focused companies contribute positively to sustainability, attract more investment, achieve better long-term financial performance, and manage risks more effectively. Therefore, the time is now for the business community to embrace sustainability as a core strategy,” said Shinta.
More than 100 speakers from the business sector, civil society and government will take part in 10 plenary and 15 thematic sessions. The plenary tackled issues ranging from green energy transition and technology, human capital, technology and innovation, sustainable living, green financing natural conservation and biodiversity protection. The inclusive Forum will also feature an open stage gathering featuring communities and social impact ventures who have strong track records on sustainability practices.
